From Gladiators to Educators | The Roman Amphitheatre ⚔️📚

Attempting to articulate succinctly how awesome this site is, has proven impossible. The Roman Amphitheatre in Alexandria is the only known one of it’s kind found within Egypt & it is a real gem. Having never been to Italy or Greece (another blog post for another time perhaps), this place was awesome!

Although it is called an Amphitheatre, the prevailing thought is that it is more likely a University than a fighting pit (hence the catchy page title that took me an hour to come up with!). This site was discovered accidentally in the 1960’s when the government were looking to build in the area, evidence suggests it was in use all the way up until the 7th Century BC.

The site has some amazing statues, the original marbles, stones, mosaic work & various pillars etc. There aren’t many staff hunting you down for tips & it is really easy to get to from most places in Alexandria. I can’t recommend this place highly enough, it was a privilege to visit!

It’s really not obvious that you are allowed there, but you can actually walk under the Lecture theatre steps. It’s tricky to find, you have to walk round the back of a couple of cabins (they look like portable toilets but I can’t be sure as they were abandoned). Once you get round the back, it’s like walking through an Ancient hallway, it can feel a little claustrophobic & the ground underneath isn’t great so be careful.

It was less than 200EGP to get in here I believe & wasn’t as heavily guarded as other tourist sites. I haven’t been able to find reliable information as to the opening times for this place, I went during day so it was open. In terms of a tour, it might be worth getting one as the couple I saw showing people around seemed very enthusiastic & knowledgeable.

I am completely new to blogging & only set this up to help people out on their journeys. If you have any questions about the article or feedback, please do leave a comment & I will get back to you.
