Setting the scene
Luxor Museum is definitely worth a visit. First opened in 1975, It is a lot smaller than the main Museums in Cairo & contains much fewer items. However, it is an awesome Museum, free from clutter & very modern. It is designed to prioritise quality over quantity with it’s artefacts.
You could combine the Luxor Museum, Luxor Temple & Museum of Mummification into one trip as they are within close proximity of each other. If you only have time for one Museum in Luxor, I strongly recommend that you visit Luxor Museum. As an FYI there are human remains in this Museum, but you can avoid them if you would prefer not to see.

top tips!
There is a very friendly old guy who stands outside the Museum, he dresses well & his English is very good which makes it tricky to spot that he is after money. He tells people he works for the tourism industry but isn’t trying to sell you anything. He will ask what you plan to do in Luxor & how much you’re paying etc, he then advises if you are paying too much. This isn’t a scam as such but he does expect you to pay him handsomely, he did try to get me to go to his ‘office’ to look at some treasure he dug up, but he doesn’t actually work at the museum so just be careful about going with him. I walked past 3 days in a row & he was doing the same with other tourists.
When you go through the ticket office, the Museum entrance is up to the left. There are people who will ask you to go straight ahead into a different area for a ‘free presentation’, it also looks like a viable entrance, so it’s easy to be convinced to enter. You will be expected to tip, I didn’t go in here, but it may be worth a look. If you don’t want to pay extra, don’t go in.
The Museum closes for a couple of hours in the afternoon, so you should plan your visit time.
Important Information
| Opening times | 09:00-14:00 & then 17:00-20:00 |
| Entry fee | It was around EGP300 to enter, at the time of writing this was around £5GBP |
| Time to complete visit | Around 1 hour, the Museum isn’t massive but still very worth a visit. |
| Getting there | It is located on the River Nile Corniche, so easy enough to find if you want to walk there. However, a local Taxi can take you close enough. You can also take horse & carriage ride, but I would advise against this, the animals are really not well looked after in Luxor. |
| Tours | I don’t think a tour guide would add much value here, all of the artefacts are well labelled with good descriptions & as the Museum is quite small, you won’t get lost etc. |
