Finding serenity amongst the chaos of Cairo: Al-Azhar Park šŸ’†ā€ā™‚ļø

I highly recommend making a pit stop here. Not only does Al -Azhar park have awesome nature & scenery, it also boasts incredible architectural sites, from city walls (That even Trump would be proud of), to Palace ruins, to Mosque complexes & alluring views of the city. Spanning 72 acres, it is easy to get lost in the beauty of this place! Be sure to check out the Hill-top restaurant, the food there was lovely (Click here for photos). Bonus tip; do not feed any stray cats, I got a shakedown from the server for this 🤪. The restaurant feeds them at the end of the day.

This site is much bigger than I had anticipated & as such ended up missing a lot of the beautiful complexes & architecture unfortunately. I would say to plan ahead on which sites you want to see there, really research the area, then take a photo or copy of the map with you. Otherwise you will spend the entire day going in circles to find everything.

Egypt is very hot! There is lots of shade here due to a multitude of beautiful trees etc, however I would recommend taking an umbrella, comfortable walking shoes & plenty of water.

As touched upon in the introduction, do not feed the stray animals here. I fed a stray cat some chicken & the server said if I do that, the cat will come back with it’s friends. I was thinking it’s a stray cat, it isn’t exactly going to have a gang of friends. Sure enough 10 minutes later while I was eating, the same cat returned with 6 or 7 others looking for food šŸ˜‚. The server assured me that the animals get well fed, but they try to discourage them from coming around people while they eat.

Opening times
09:00 – 22:00, I was there during the day, however I would imagine the views would be spectacular in the Evening
Entry fee This was around 50EGP (less than £1GBP), I have seen very expensive tickets on random websites, do not get ripped off. Just buy your ticket at the office when you arrive.
Time to complete visit I was here around 4+ hours, but that’s including eating & completing lots of involuntary side missions (i.e getting lost). If you take the shuttle bus around the site & don’t eat, you could see everything in 2-3 hours.
Getting thereYou can take an Uber here from anywhere in Cairo, it is only 15/20 minutes drive from Downtown Cairo. I walked, which in all honesty was a terrible mistake. Whilst Cairo is a beautiful place, there is a lot of poverty in some of the areas around the roads into the park, which are less receptive to tourists & have more pushy locals.
ToursI didn’t take a tour, but there are shuttle bus tours to get around, in hindsight I wish I had taken them as I missed a lot of sites unfortunately.
